jangal: to teach

When it comes to the Wolof language, everyone is my jangalekat (teacher). Baye Fall, who owns the local boutik down the street, teaches me new words every day. My tailor, Thierno, refuses to speak to me in French and instead makes me practice my Wolof with him. I practice Wolof everywhere––with the fruit vendors and the guards on my walk to school, with my family and with my Senegalese friends. I am grateful for all of my jangalekats!
