On Fridays, everyone wears their best clothing and it is a marvel to see. Men go to work wearing the traditional boubou, consisting of long tunics that reach past their knees and matching pants, often made of light linen or dark, sturdy wax. But it is the women who are truly a sight. Gowned in all their finery, sporting blazing fabrics of every color in the rainbow, bedazzled and sequined. Their richly colored scarves tied African-style around their hair to match their form-fitting traditional dresses, their shoulders swathed in embroidered gauze, their eyelids made up in vibrant powders to match their clothes. I can’t help but stop and stare!
