At the fabric market, we search for the perfect cloth. Rows and rows of stalls stretch as far as the eye can see, boasting shining sequined pre-made dresses or reams and reams of colorful cloth. We step into a stall, step further inside, and we find ourselves in a rabbit warren of beautiful colors. The traditional wax fabric overwhelms our eyes with dizzying arrays of its punchy, vibrant prints. Ornate lace trimmings hang from shop windows and richly embroidered silks sit stacked in piles as tall as I am. How will I ever decide!
In the end, I settle on two fabrics: one coral-pink with metallic golden designs, the other a deep magenta with an African print. But the addiction has already started—I know I’ll be back to Marché HLM!
